Alaska Native Economic Wellbeing Journey

June 5-12, 2023 | Southeast Alaska

We invite you to join JumpScale and Spruce Root CDFI to experience Native-led economic and cultural resilience in Southeast Alaska.

This curated journey will enable you to learn firsthand how Alaska Native cultures continue to thrive through building regenerative local economies that enhance cultural values. From fishing villages to Native boardrooms, the week has been carefully curated by Alaska Native leaders to showcase the connectivity among communities, businesses, healing, cultural arts, subsistence lifestyle, and what it takes to steward regional ecosystems. The week will also include a deep exploration of Resilience Circles, an innovative model to grow Alaska Native businesses through a wellbeing-first approach rooted in Indigenous economic frameworks and cultural practices.

Our time in Alaska coincides with the launch of the Polynesian Navigation Society's circumnavigation of the Pacific.

The voyage will cover 41,000 miles and touch 46 countries and archipelagoes. Watch the video to learn more, and check out the proposed route below.

This journey is carefully curated to showcase the connections between the Alaska Native corporate boardroom to our cultural arts, the subsistence lifestyle, and what it takes to steward a promising economic landscape for future generations in the region.

You will experience JumpScale and Spruce Root’s decolonized approach to partnership building and explore new models for Indigenous investing. Events include:

  • Connecting with Native entrepreneurs

  • Learning from Native leaders

  • Medicinal/subsistence plant walks

  • Cruise the fjords with Indigenous landscape interpretation

  • Hands-on cultural arts workshop

While most of the trip takes place in breathtaking Juneau, Alaska, we will make a side trip to a traditional Alaska Native village (off the tourist path).

This trip will share the resilience, Native wisdom, and innovation born from our worldviews living in the rainforest that have sustained our relatives since time immemorial. Everything will be local from the:

  • Native foods you try

  • People you meet

  • Stories you hear

  • Medicines you may take home

You will come away from this experience with inspiration from Native-led solutions to people and planet that you can apply to your life and work, but more importantly, with new friends and an understanding of Native life in Alaska that you could never experience as a “tourist.”
